Maria Webster was the first woman to gain a place as a driver in Formula 1.
Her team were a bit concerned, though, because she spent so much time listening to her Buddy Holly CDs instead of practicing.
However, at the Brazilian Grand Prix she gained second to pole position. The first time in the history of motor racing that a female driver had taken part, never mind taken on the leader.
Unfortunately, she locked her brakes at the first corner, skidded off the track, and ended up going through the gravel trap and crashing into the safety wall.
Having wrecked £6 million of racing car, her team boss was not too happy.
The BBC didn’t get to comment on the next bit…
“Maria, you will come here, and remove your fire-proof overalls,” said the boss, as he brandished a cane. “You will then remove your knickers as well.”
“Actually, I don’t wear any knickers under my overalls, ‘cos it gets a bit too hot in the driver’s seat!”
“So it’s straight to the bare bottom then?” said the boss.
“Oh yes please!”
