Aussie Papers

Now before I post my finds in the Australian newspaper archives, I just wanted to share a little vanilla thing that happened when I spoke to my Mum on the phone today. I was describing my new tattoo to her and we started to talk about my Dad who passed away 11 years ago. She wanted to send me some items of his and of my late Brother, and I asked her if she still had his medal from the Jewish-Arab conflict over the land of Palestine from 1946-1948. Can you imagine how stunned I was that my Mother, who was married to him for 40 years, new NOTHING about it?

Let me point out that Dad was an extremely private man who hardly spoke to anyone. While I was aware of his medal I never really spoke to him about his time in Palestine until the last week that I got to spend with him. It is a wonderful memory because he spoke more in that last week when I was alone with him than I had ever known him to talk. So I got to hear his tales of cooking eggs on the tank, swimming in the Dead Sea and walking the nine stations of the cross. Now while all of this was totally new to my Mum, (still don’t know how she never knew about this) she then stunned me by saying “I knew he served in the Korean war”. Now hang on a minute, 11 years after my Dad died and I find out he was a Korean veteran as well? When I did some research online the time frames totally match up, and while I had never heard of about this before, I have no doubt in my mind that it was true. Bottom line is, Mum is now on the hunt for a war medal that she has never seen. I hope she finds it 🙂

Now on to my finds of the day.

While I was at work today I began to scour the Australian Newspaper archives for spanking related material. There are so many articles about spanking in the 100 year archives that it will take me a year to get through them all. But, I was able to find some early pictures during my initial search. The first two are from the Ivor Novello play “Full House”. Both pics have a description underneath, though to actually see the spanking in the second pic you would have to have better eyes than I do. Pic 1 is from 1952 and pic 2 is from 1941. Both pics are from the Mercury newspaper.

The next pic is an advertisement from 1917 and was a local paper in Hobart?

And finally, here is a clip from the 1959 British film “Room At The Top”. Does anyone know the significance of this particular clip?

  1. This bought back memories for me. Would have been dad’s birthday yesterday. He was stationed in Palestine for a time but not sure of the dates. He never would speak of his time there.

    Thanks Richard.

  2. My Dad was in the country next door, Egypt, from 1946 – 1949 with the RAOC, it’s a small world.

Haven’t got a clue about the clip, looking forward to finding out though.

  3. I tried to improve the second picture, but with no luck. All the contrast is gone, too much white and real black, so you can’t really do much about it. Shame.

  4. When these three naughty singing sisters are taken over the knees, by the three gentlemen, it made beautiful music to my ears. I could listen to those whacks of the spanks they were given all day long.
