The New York Evening World — March 18th, 1903.

It is amazing what you can find at the library of congress, and your Pup has set to the task of archiving the spanking aspects of it đŸ™‚ This is amazing to read being that it is 105 years old, and even more amazing that the story itself reads like it could be from a modern day tale!! The archive that I have come across covers newspapers from the years 1890 something to 1911, and just the simple word “Spanking” produced nearly 3,000 articles. I made it through the first 40 entries so there is going to be a good year’s research there for me đŸ™‚

Your best bet is to open this entry by clicking on the article itself. Now it is going to open up really big, but it is best for reading the story. Can you imagine how big the full newspaper is? This article I actually cropped from the broad sheet cover of the New York Evening World. Old newspapers fascinate me so you can bank on ol’ Houndog posting the odd interesting article here and there. 1903 folks, think about it, most of your Grandparents probably hadn’t been born yet đŸ™‚ Continue reading below the article once you have read it for more on “Big Bill” Devery.

An addendum to this story: After doing some research I discovered that “Big Bill” Devery was the chief of police in New York and he was also one of the original owners of the New York Yankees when they were known as The New York Highlanders. He was so crooked that even Mark Twain wrote a scathing piece about him in the New York Times in 1901. Here is a pic of “Big Bill” Devery.

  1. I would be interested in the FULL story – an unbiased version of it – regarding that video. I’ve learned that the media, and even amateur photographers camera footage, rarely captures the full scope of what the whole situation is from beginning to end. I am not saying what the police officer did was just at all…just saying a few seconds of clip doesn’t capture the full story. Who was the guy pushed? Why did the cop say he did such a thing? (I mean, come on, he did it in front of a crowd of people — pretty stupid thing to do for “no reason” if you ask me) What were the actual circumstances that led up to what happened? And I don’t necessarily mean just the few seconds before.

I’ve seen “footage” on many occasions that appears “unprovoked”, aired over and over (in slow motion, too, for effect) on news channels, but having inside information on what really happened, knew that what the camera was showing and the media was saying was far from the full story of what brought things to that point.

Circulation of only snippets of an actual story is what fuels the kangaroo courts in this country, led mainly by the lynch mob media.

Any good, credible sources on what the full story (both sides equally shared) behind that video is? I’d be interested in reading it.

  2. No problem, Ginger. Just put Patrick Pogan or Andrew Long into a google news search and you can read all about it. The guy was held for 26 hours based on the police officers report, one piece of which he said the cyclist rode his bike into him causing both of them to hit the floor and injuring the officer. I won’t say anymore though, you can read any of 270 news reports on the incident for the background information.

  3. This certainly looked like a deliberate and vicious assault. I don’t think the footage is fake. You can clearly see the cyclist trying to avoid the cop and the cop clearly accellerating to push him off has bike. A for mitigation; well if you or I did it we would have no chance of finding any excuse.

  4. Richard,

I love your research and the ball story! I am looking forward to more of your finds!
