Windsor Wednesday Classic – 6

From 1951,  a paddle party!! Yes,  sorority’s and fraternity’s used to have such events. In this pic we see a young man demonstrating excellent cricketing technique with his version of a cover drive. The girl could be practicing for playing in the slips,  or perhaps she is the cricket ball about to be whacked hard with a paddle 🙂

  1. Being born in that era, I can remember my cousin, female who is 7 years older than me telling my mom about the paddlings she got when pledging her sorority and the spankings she got when she misbehaved. Amazing pic, thanks for sharing.

  2. Haven’t seen this one before. Much as I love sorority paddling, the fantasy most often beats the reality. When we’re young spankos, perhaps not even in college yet ourselves, the idea has a great allure, but we don’t realize then how little college kids know about paddling (or anything else). For one thing, their technique is terrible! Bending the knees angles the hips downward, making it impossible to apply the paddle properly. And the ridiculously oversize paddles that are sometimes used, as here – what can they be thinking of?

By the way, paddle parties still continue to this day in the U.S. and actual paddlings still do take place, even though hazing is mostly banned, at least on campus. I believe that paddling used for internal sorority discipline has waned since the 1950’s, and is extremely rare today.

  3. The paddler in question is likely mimicking a golf stroke. Very few Americans follow the sport of cricket. The phrase “in a sticky wicket” has found its way into the American lexicon, however.
Cricket was on local TV when we vacationed in Jamaica a few years ago. I thought it was really cool and tried to learn the rules. Forgotten what “slips” means, though.
    Good pic 🙂
